Coaching is a holistic approach to help people bridge the gap between where they are in their personal and professional lives and where they would like to be. Life and business coaching address issues including achieving goals, finding balance in life, relationship enhancement, personal growth, and work performance. Coaches work with individuals and organizations to facilitate change, achieve goals and maximize performance.

Coaching has been part of life since the beginning of the human race when older members of society taught and guided the young in life skills. Religion, philosophy, and literature all have many examples of coaching in their lessons and stories. Sports and the arts have used coaching for many years to improve performance. Coaching as a profession began in the 1980s in the United States. The International Coach Federation was established in 1995 to help expand the profession.

Current/Future Situation

There are currently more than 5,000 members of the International Coach Federation worldwide. Coaching is one of the fastest growing professions. The demand for coaches is expected to continue as more individuals and companies realize the benefits of coaching in helping them achieve their personal and professional goals.

Career Descriptions/Places to Work

Some coaches specialize in personal coaching, some are professional coaches, some concentrate on corporate or executive coaching, and some are active in all areas. They can be self-employed or employees; full time or part time. Corporate consulting companies hire coaches to work with their clients' executives and management staff to achieve company goals. Sometimes coaching is by telephone, sometimes in person. There are a variety of opportunities for coaches.

Day in the Life

A professional personal coach may start her day with a telephone consultation with a new client. She will ask the client many questions about where the client is now in her life and where she wants to be. They will explore possibilities and goals together and decide on specific actions to help move the client in the right direction. The initial consultation may last about 30 minutes. The coach will then make another appointment with the client. A coach may have several clients each day. It is very rewarding to help people achieve their goals and life visions.
